Gang Sheet Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions
What is a DTF gang sheet?
A DTF gang sheet is a single transfer film — typically 22″ or 24″ wide — that holds multiple individual designs arranged together for a single print run. Instead of printing one design at a time, you nest all your jobs onto one sheet, cut them apart after printing, and press each one individually. Gang sheets reduce material waste and lower per-transfer cost by spreading the fixed film and ink consumption across multiple designs.
How do I calculate gang sheet size for DTF printing?
Start with your roll width (typically 22″) and the total print dimensions of each design including a small gap (0.25″–0.5″) between items. Pack designs row by row — tallest items first — until the row is full, then start a new row. The required sheet length is the sum of all row heights. This calculator automates that packing logic and gives you an estimated length plus the nearest standard sheet size.
What is gang sheet efficiency in DTF printing?
Efficiency is the ratio of design area to total sheet area, expressed as a percentage. A 70% efficiency score means 70% of the film is covered by actual designs and 30% is blank waste. Most production shops target 65–80% efficiency. Grouping similar-sized designs together and mixing tall and short designs in alternating rows both improve it.
How do I calculate cost per DTF transfer on a gang sheet?
Divide the total sheet cost by each design's proportional share of the sheet area. If a design accounts for 15% of total raw design area, it absorbs 15% of the total sheet cost — divide that by quantity to get cost per piece. For linear-priced suppliers: total cost = sheet length × rate per inch. For area-priced suppliers: total cost = sheet width × sheet length × rate per square inch.
What is the best gang sheet width for DTF printing?
22″ (approximately 55cm) is the most common DTF roll width and gives the best compatibility with standard garment print sizes. A 22″ sheet fits a 14″ full-front design with room for smaller items alongside it. 24″ rolls add flexibility for jobs with multiple large back prints. Set the roll width to match your printer's actual maximum printable width — not the media roll width, which is typically 1″ wider.
What is the difference between this calculator and the DTF Gang Sheet Builder?
This calculator estimates sheet length, efficiency, and cost based on design dimensions — it is a planning and quoting tool. The DTF Gang Sheet Builder (Pro) is a full visual canvas where you upload actual artwork, drag and nest designs interactively, and export a print-ready file for your RIP. Use this calculator for job planning; use the Builder for production layout.
