Most placement guides are written by transfer resellers to move pre-made inventory. This one is written for the operator running the press. The measurements exist for production reasons — collar construction variance, garment size scaling, platen reference consistency — and understanding why the numbers are what they are prevents the failures that come from treating them as arbitrary defaults.

Front T-Shirt Placement

The front of a standard crew-neck tee has three main placement zones. The collar seam is the top reference for all of them. Left chest uses the side seam as a horizontal check after setting vertical position. Center chest and full front both center on the fold with a side seam verification pass.

Full back uses the same collar seam reference as the front. The common error here is measuring from the collar point instead of the collar seam — on some garment constructions that introduces 1.5 cm or more of variance across a size run. Hoodies are where collar-drop measurements break down. The collar-to-pocket distance varies across sizes, across manufacturers, and across hood constructions. Operators who measure from the collar seam get inconsistent gaps above the pocket across a size run. The pocket top edge is stable across sizes of the same style — use it as the primary reference and measure up from there.

Collar seam, not collar point — everywhere
The collar seam is where the collar attaches to the body of the garment. The collar point is the top edge of the collar. On some constructions these are 1.5 cm or more apart. Using the collar point as the reference introduces that variance into every measurement across a production run. It is visible on finished garments and inconsistent across sizes. The collar seam eliminates that variable. Apply this rule to every placement in the table — it is not specific to full back.

Set the vertical position from the collar seam drop. Then use the side seam only as a horizontal check to confirm the design is not drifting toward the shoulder or toward center. The side seam is not the primary reference for vertical positioning.
Hoodies: pocket edge overrides collar distance
For any hoodie with a kangaroo pocket, the pocket top edge is the primary reference and collar-drop measurements should not be used as the main vertical reference. The collar-to-pocket distance is not consistent across sizes of the same style, which means collar-drop measurements produce varying gaps above the pocket depending on garment size.
Garment Construction Variables
Standard measurements assume a basic crew-neck jersey tee. They become less reliable on more complex constructions.
Ring-spun cotton with higher collar construction
The collar sits 5–8 mm higher than standard on ring-spun styles with structured collars. Using standard collar-drop numbers places the design higher than expected. Adjust the reference measurement downward to compensate — or measure the collar seam height on each blank style before setting production parameters.
Raglan sleeves
Raglan sleeves extend in one piece to the collar, leaving a diagonal seam from underarm to collarbone. The side seam reference is unusable for centering on raglan styles. Use the shoulder-to-shoulder measurement to find true center instead.
Plus-size garments
Proportional artwork scaling is required. A 25 cm design that reads correctly on a Large looks undersized on a 3XL. Scale DTF artwork to match the visual proportion of the garment before printing the gang sheet.

Seating the garment
Thread the garment onto the platen when possible. Threading separates the front and back fabric layers, which eliminates interference from back seams, pocket interiors, and rear labels. For thick or premium garments where threading is difficult without distorting the fabric, use a guard sheet or internal pad rather than forcing the garment onto the platen.
Pressing pillows
Mandatory for over-seam pressing (shoulder seam, zipper, waistband) and thick zipper areas. A pressing pillow ensures the platen makes full, even contact with the transfer area when the garment surface is uneven. Thin single-layer garments — basic tees on a flat platen with the transfer well clear of seams — typically do not require a pillow.
Pressure recalibration between garment weights
DTF requires heavy, even pressure. When adding a pressing pillow or switching from a thin jersey tee to a heavy fleece hoodie, the effective pressure changes. Recalibrate press pressure before the first press of the new garment type. Do not assume the pressure setting that worked on the previous garment applies.
